Welding is perhaps the most common fabrication process when it comes to steel and other metals. During welding, the fabrication technician uses a welding kit to join metal pieces together to form the finished structure. Welding is applied to many steel products such as sheets, rods and beams. In construction, it is used to create roofing structures, staircases, gates, fencing and other steel structures:

Where does welding lie in the overall fabrication process?

The welding process is often carried out after the subject steel pieces have been prepared in the workshop. For example, the steel pieces may be cut to bring then to the required length. They may also be stamped, bent or bored to create the designs needed in the finished product.

Once this is done, the pieces are joined together using a welding kit. When done, the weld structure is blasted, detailed or painted depending on the condition of the steel and the intended application. Once done, the finished product is transported to the site and installed.

How are steel products welded?

There are several welding technologies used in metal fabrication. When it comes to steel, MIG welding (metal inert gas welding) is the desired welding choice. That's because MIG welding ensures high quality joints that retain the strength of steel metals. This technology utilizes a weld gun that feeds the electrode wire in the middle. Gas is then fed onto the sides to create an arc that shields the welded area from impurities.

Different electrodes can be used during MIG welding; it always depends on the characteristics of the steel metal being weld. The right electrode stick should have the same properties as the steel, or stronger, in order to create a strong joint. For the gas, a mix of argon and CO2 is used, often in the ratio of 75/25, respectively.

Advantages of welding

Welding is a common fabrication process due to a number of reasons:

  • Welding retains the structural integrity of the fabrication structure. The molten material simulates the steel metal so as not to create any weak points.
  • Welding can be used to create numerous steel joints, no matter the configuration of the materials in question. This makes it an easy and flexible fabrication option.
  • Welding is permanent. Once done, the jointed pieces become one. The only way to reverse the process would be to cut the joint. This makes welding ideal for construction, industrial transport, mining and commercial applications.

Although welding sounds straightforward, it takes skill to ensure that the finished products are of high quality and bear the same angles as the planned designs.
